Karen Orteza

Karen Orteza is a Pre-K/K1 teacher at Nanjing International School, an International Baccalaureate school in Nanjing, China.
She started her teaching career in Germany, which put the love of international teaching into her blood. An American with her heart in two countries, Karen has spent the last thirty-plus years teaching in the USA and China.

Karen holds a Master of Early Childhood Education from the University of Wisconsin, U.S.A. and dual Bachelor’s degrees in Elementary and Secondary-English from Slippery Rock University, U.S.A.

Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, Anji Play, and bloggers with a mind for play, Karen’s goal is to provide an environment where children are free to imagine, explore, and create. She believes that building strong relationships, developing curiosity about the world, and taking the lead in one's own learning keeps children engaged, motivated, and enthusiastic about learning.

Karen loves to play as much as her students do and, together, they fill their days exploring the wonders, both inside and outside of the classroom. Karen’s mantra for her class is a quote by Loris Malaguzzi, “Nothing without joy,” for when a child is immersed in self-directed play, joy emerges.
